About Hans and Mountain Adventures

Hans Solmssen is an American-born, Swiss-trained mountain guide based in Verbier, Switzerland. During the winter, he leads clients on backcountry ski tours, while summers find him mountaineering, e-biking, and sailing across diverse landscapes. With many clients returning year after year—some for over three decades—Hans has built enduring relationships grounded in shared experiences and mutual trust.

Through his Mountain Adventures Guide’s Cooperative in Verbier, Hans connects clients with the best professional guides for each unique itinerary, ensuring personalized and expertly led excursions.

Early Roots in Hawaii

Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, Hans developed a taste for adventure from an early age, helping his father break horses as soon as he could walk. After leaving Hawai‘i to attend Johnson State College in northern Vermont, he discovered winter sports, majoring in Urban and Environmental Planning while perfecting his skiing, ice climbing, and rock climbing skills in the nearby mountains.

Path to Becoming a Swiss Mountain Guide

Hans moved to Verbier in 1983, where local climbers recognized his potential and encouraged him to enter the rigorous Swiss Mountain Guide’s Training program. He began formal studies in 1991 and earned his UIAGM status two-and-a-half years later, marking the start of his professional guiding career.

Guiding Philosophy

Hans is passionate about sharing both alpine and maritime experiences with his clients. Many have become close friends, evolving together through each new adventure. By integrating cognitive behavioral coaching into his trips, Hans helps clients remain grounded in the present moment, pushing their limits safely and enjoying life—whether high on a peak, sailing across open waters, or biking through stunning mountain terrain.
